Cycling and Climbing the Sierras

Hwy 180 West, CA

Ride Description

This climb is #53 on the Top 100 U.S. Climb Index and follows Hwy 180 east up and through Kings Canyon Road to Generals Highway and the top of the climb where Hwy 180 intersects Hwy 198. See Kings Canyon / Sequoia National Park Home Page for more climbs in this area.

We have ridden only the Hwy 198 portion of this climb (having done the Whitaker Forest and the Hwy 21-245-180-198 rides on our day in the area). This climb takes us into the Giant Forest and we are treated to incredible views of near and far thick forested mountains, Giant Sequoias and, if we continue past the high point of the climb on down towards the Hwy 198 climb (another 26 miles and 2,600' of climbing) to the largest tree by volume in the world (General Sherman Tree).

Turn right onto Whitaker Forest Road at mile 12.5 and ride down about a mile to the "ride through tree" (well, that's what we call it - see slideshow) which is on your right - pretty cool stuff and well worth the ride - go another mile to where the road briefly levels off and you are surrounded by a grove of incredible Sequoia trees.
